When the Miracle Happens… and You Disappear

Clients come to me struggling — sometimes with themselves, sometimes with their kids. I guide them, coach them, walk alongside them through sleepless nights, anxious mornings, and overwhelming days. I cheer them on through the small wins, help them navigate setbacks, and celebrate when the pieces finally click. And then… poof. They disappear.


The other day, I got a message from someone I’d never spoken to before. She’s an avid reader of my daily blog, but this note stopped me in my tracks:


“As someone who suffers from pregnancy-induced insomnia (is there even such a thing?), I’ve been following your posts with avid interest. About a month ago, I changed one small thing in my life and have not suffered insomnia since! Please email me so I can share my miracle.”


And then… nothing.


No follow-up. No reply. No shared miracle. Just silence.


At first, I was curious, maybe even a little frustrated. I wanted to know what she did. I wanted to celebrate her success. I wanted to hear about the impact. But then it hit me — this is classic human nature. And it’s something I see all the time, not just in sleep coaching.



Why we complain faster than we say thanks


Humans are wired to react to problems. When something goes wrong, we complain. We demand answers. We share frustrations — loudly, quickly, and often repeatedly. Research confirms it: complaints and negative feedback travel faster than positive stories.


In everyday life, studies show that the average person complains more than four times a day.


Meanwhile, gratitude travels much more slowly. In one study, only 23% of participants who wrote gratitude letters actually sent them.


Translation: we’re quick to scream, slow to say thanks. We report what’s wrong, but we vanish when things go right.



For coaches, therapists, and friends — the ghosting stings


When someone doesn’t circle back to share their “miracle update,” it leaves us hanging. We wonder: Did it really work? How did it feel? What changed?


And here’s the kicker: the silence isn’t just awkward — it’s a missed opportunity. Sharing successes inspires others. It reinforces the change. It completes the loop. One small victory can ripple far beyond the person experiencing it.

What if we rewired human nature — just a little?


Imagine a world where, when something goes right, we go back. We share the update. We say thanks. Gratitude research shows that this isn’t just a feel-good gesture — it strengthens prosocial behavior and inspires more helping, sharing, and connection.


Closing the loop honors the effort. It celebrates progress. And it can encourage others still struggling to take the next step.
